Consorting with Black Hats and Negotiating with Cybercriminals: The Ethics of Information Security

Page history last edited by Tobias 8 years, 4 months ago

Are you a part of the hacker team?

I think this article will teach me on is it really good to be consorting with black hats or with hackers just to know if your system is safe cause you know there is a saying that if you want to be the best defender you must also have experience being attack so that you can adapt on the possible outcomes that could happen for example if you are building a website and you want to know if your website is very protected from malwares and hackers then of course what you need to do is get someone you know and make him destroy your system by hacking or doing some illegal things inside your website the better the hacker the better this exercise will be because if you hire a very great hacker then most probably your system could get hacked several times but if the hacker is a person you know and a trustful friend then all is good for you because with that you would be able to adapt to the situation.

What’s more, you deserve to be hacked

  • Based from what I have learned in this article there is a lot going on in the net with hackers I for one are one of the victims of such acts like this one these hackers or black hats that we speak are people who likes to torture people in the net or blackmail or do a lot of damage in the daily lives of people using the net there is a paragraph in the article that says that a lot of people’s lives are ruined some are hurt some are blackmailed and at least one committed suicide based from this I am assuming these so called hackers or black hats from the forums are actually really bad people but if you look at them deep enough you could see some potential in them like they could help you in protecting your own website for example you have no idea in the world on how to improve the systems of your website webpage or your program you could hire a hacker that you trust and make him do the hacking inside your program and with this you could already identify that your system needs this kinds of defenses or features in order to further protect your systems from harm also I read another article that is like this one it is about cyber criminals these are people who are also hackers and a cyber criminal means that cyber criminal is an individual who commits cyber crimes, where he/she makes use of the computer either as a tool or as a target or as both and also Cyber criminals often work in organized groups and of course their weapon in doing these kinds of acts are by using a computer as their target: These criminals attack other people's computers to perform malicious activities, such as spreading viruses, data theft, identity theft, etc. and also they use these people who are IT or IS and these are their roles based from another article that I have read.
  • Programmers: Write code or programs used by cyber criminal organization
  • Distributors: Distribute and sell stolen data and goods from associated cyber criminals
  • IT experts: Maintain a cyber criminal organization's IT infrastructure, such as servers, encryption technologies and databases
  • Hackers: Exploit systems, applications and network vulnerabilities
  • Fraudsters: Create and deploy schemes like spam and phishing
  • System hosts and providers: Host sites and servers that possess illegal contents
  • Cashiers: Provide account names to cyber criminals and control drop accounts
  • Money mules: Manage bank account wire transfers
  • Tellers: Transfer and launder illegal money via digital and foreign exchange methods
  • Leaders: Often connected to big bosses of large criminal organizations. Assemble and direct cyber criminal teams, and usually lack technical knowledge.

Also there is also something called cyber crimes it means it is a crime in which a computer is the object of the crime (hacking, phishing, spamming) or is used as a tool to commit an offense (child pornography, hate crimes). Cyber criminals may use computer technology to access personal information, business trade secrets, or use the Internet for exploitative or malicious purposes. Criminals can also use computers for communication and document or data storage. Criminals who perform these illegal activities are often referred to as hackers. Cyber-crime may also be referred to as computer crime. Common types of cyber crime include online bank information theft, identity theft, online predatory crimes and unauthorized computer access. More serious crimes like cyber terrorism are also of significant concern.

And also there is another article that I have read about cyber bullying it is like a hacker that just wanted to tease you it is like this Cyber bullying is a practice where an individual or group uses the Internet to ridicule, harass or harm another person. The social and emotional harm inflicted by cyberbullies grows out of - or leads to - physical bullying in the offline world. Cyberbullies use social media and smartphones to harass victims from remote or local areas. Traditional bullying usually stops when a victim returns to the safety of his home, but cyber bullying is a continuous process maintained through email, texting, forum/blog posts and other communication vehicles. Even if cyber bullying victims change profile settings and avoid certain websites, cyberbullies may easily continue public bullying activities and also I think people has their own way of doing things and mostly people does not want to have problems that they are not paid to be concerned with thus they will keep it to themselves and making  the problem worse for them it’s like they are thinking that the problem is still small but it is actually big it is not good enough thus make it larger and use the event to convince the board to give you the budget you need. Most of us have different perspectives to a problem, in the way we view the problem statistically and ethically. The breaches in the systems of the company all depends on its maintenance. For me when a system has been breached alerting the company only if they can handle the problem and report only to the government immediately f it gets worse to the point that the company can’t handle it anymore. Based from my point of view, my answer to the question “You can try to contextualize or localize what you read (will this happen in my community, country?)” from the format link, I think this topic is happening now in our society based from their findings about 1 Million breaches was recorded and if people don’t face this problem it can worsen and it will be hard to prevent this actions, for me we must take action to extinguish this problem while it is still small. Some will use bribery like what they say as whitepapers that negotiation to cyber criminals and pay for the data that they got and end the deal, this is bad in many ways because first of all we don’t know if they don’t have any copy of that file again and secondly this method will only promote “the cobra effect” that we discussed in our class that “the government will bay for capturing cobras to lessen the cobra infestation in their city thus people capture and breed them to make money” like what “whitepapers” are all about, the hackers will not stop if they can benefit from it. As I said nothing good will come out even if u somewhat “bribe” them not to do bad things but come one for the love of god why do you of all people trust someone like them to agree on your terms, sure maybe there are some who will agree but no one will stop because they receive income that could improve the daily lives of this very bad hackers because of their intense incoming and the fact that they are enjoying their jobs makes it even more hard to quit hacking cause as they say doing something bad is more easier than doing something good.

5 things that I have learned:

1. Hackers are bad because they destroy systems

2. Hackers can be good if you know them and have good intentions of just improving your system

3. Cyber bullying and other cyber crimes are bad

4. You might kill someone in real life if you keep harassing them online

5. There is always room for improvement.

5 integrative questions

1. How does hackers invade our daily life without even physically touching us?

2. Can hackers be caught fat enough before they escape?

3. Why do many people lie to hack more than to protect?

4. Why do hackers exist?

5. How do you think the world look like if there was no hackers?
