Business Ethics: A guide for Managers HF5387 T43 1996
1. Chapter 1: Why Create an Ethical Working Environment?
· “Tracking values issues requires that before a word about ethics is put on paper or uttered at a meeting, you should reflect on some basic about management, about yourself and about the people and about relationship.” [Page 18]
I choose this quotation from chapter one of this book because I do believe that ethics comes from the self; our ethics is the mirror of our body/personality/character. And also, ethical standards will start from the people above us and then eventually it will reach the last part of the hierarchy. In this quotation also, the quote tries to tell us something that we should be responsible enough in our own environment/relationship/s; and for our own self. In the business side of ethics, there are certain rules or certain laws that each and everyone inside that institution should follow. But you should not just consider yourself; instead you have/should consider time and the realization or the reflection side. In building ethical standards, time is also an essential part and contributor since ethics has right time and right place. In having time being considered in establishing ethical standards; it’s not that easy to find time. It’s hard to management time if we are not discipline enough.
And last to consider is the reflection side. We need to reflect in order for us to be aware of what’s happening in our environment; it may be in the office, at home, at school or even when you are with your friends. Thinking is a good thing to practice since we can use this in many aspect of life. Well as far as business ethics is concern, it’s important this part since managers really need to think/ to reflect than more of the doings.
2. Chapter 2: Why Do People Make Unethical Decisions?
· “Diverse influences may affect our ethics; what we want or need may outweigh our considerations of right and wrong. Sometimes those pressures are such that we behave unethically.” [Page 44]
I choose this quotation from the book that I have read for my book review because this chapter or this quote has a message for people or for the bright people out there. Every day we deal with people; in school, work or family relatives. And with that, we can erase the fact that sometimes, we are getting pressured with different things; it maybe personal, or it may be with friends, we can’t tell but one thing in this quote wants us to understand. And that is the about pressure. They say that these pressures can lead us to act not so well or should we say unethically.
And the issues regarding the toleration of the right and wrong doings; that can lead to personal pressure and will result to unethical behavior; the point here is that, we should not be too aggressive to things and take into consideration the opinions or the suggestions of others. Let’s not focus mainly to ourselves.
But there is this instance wherein in considering concepts/opinions/suggestions of other people or from the external part of the business there is a tendency that the ideas might crash and might give a negative impression for the whole company. And let’s be sure that everything must be in our standards.
3. Chapter 3: What Does Unethical Behavior Cost?
· “In successful business relationships are built on the conviction that each party believes that what the other person is saying is true.” [Page 53]
This quotation is about having trust with people especially in the business. Trust plays a vital role in the every relationship, business, friendship and alike. There are a lot of factors to consider in giving out trust to someone. First concern would be his personality and attitude. If we will see trust in the business side, in order for a certain business to succeed they really have to trust one another; since they really need to act as a group and with team work so that they could reach success. Trust can be applied in many things, but let’s focus more on the business trust. Once this trust had been destroyed due to some reason, many possible things could happen. Some of them are lack of confidentiality, lack of commitment to work and low self-esteem.
