“The ethics of Facial Recognition Software”

By: Holly Richmod

Title:

“Face for Password”

First Impression

There’s a lot of good things if you have a facial recognition software whether it is for personal or commercial use. It will be very useful for some but can still be manipulated by others.

Quote

No matter what you choose to do or not do, your life exists in the cloud, indexed by Google, in the background of a photo album on Facebook, and across thousands of spammy directories that somehow know where you live and where you went to high school …  You may be able to change your name, … but you can’t change your face. And the cloud never forgets a face.

Reflection

I read one article, it says that the primary users of facial recognition software have been law enforcement agencies, who used the system to capture random faces in crowds. Before its just a dream but now its readily available in public. And it becomes more and more popular, even phone has this kind of feature already. Facial recognition is everywhere, become less expensive, making their use more widespread. But like any other software I believe it can easily be manipulated, so we need to be more careful and observant everytime we are using it. Technology have everything to offer, however it is not always accurate. It's also beneficial for a company to have more information about you because it allows them to customize their service and products as well as their advertising. And it's certainly beneficial to the customer because they don't have to waste time essentially relaying that information. Facial recognition technology promises benefits for consumers, if they are willing to sacrifice some privacy. In addition to privacy concerns, there are also ethical questions to consider. If someone can use Google Glass or his cell phone to take a picture of you and use it to search for you in Facebook or on Google, then he could dig out all kinds of personal information about you while you are shopping or driving down the street. Clearly, privacy concerns surround this technology and its use. Finding a balance between national security and individuals’ privacy rights will be the subject of increasing discussion, especially as technology progresses.Good thing is that it can identify people that are being watched like terrorists, criminals etc.

5 Things I’ve learned

  1. we must consider pros and cons of having facial recognition system
  2. facial recognition is not only for law enforcement but for public use as well
  3. It’s a great help for companies but may affect privacy of an individual
  4. Facial recognition can be used to target shoppers
  5. Its not always accurate

5 Integrated Questions

  1. How can we make sure that facial recognition is accurate?
  2. What are the purpose of inventing facial recognition?
  3. How can people adopt in fast growing technology?
  4. Why do we need face recognition software?
  5. What are the pros and cons of having facial recognition system?
